Randall 1983 described rubrizonatus on page 35 in the 1983 magazine article, "A new fish of the genus Anthias (Perciformes: Serranidae) from the western Pacific, with notes on A. luzonensis", originally placing the species in the genus Anthias Bloch, 1792.
