from intertidal, seagrass, and coral reef habitats to a depth of 25 m (most records from less than 5 m). Fig. 9.

Scorpaenidae (scorpionfishes)
Pontinus rhodochrous (Gunther, 1872). Described from Sulawesi; evidently broadly distributed in the Indo-Pacific but its exact distribution will be made known when the genus is revised. Depth range about 100¬300 m. One specimen is deposited in the National Museum of Natural History (USNM 357793), and one sent to Stuart G. Ross (Gulf Coast Laboratory, Ocean Springs, MS, USA) who provided the identification. Fig. 10.

Serranidae (groupers and allies)
Aethaloperca rogaa (Forskal, 1775). Red Sea (type locality) and east coast of Africa to Fiji. In Kwajalein usually on lagoon reefs at depths of about 8 to 30 rn, especially in the vicinity of caves with aggregations of cardinalfishes, and other species of fish. A market specimen from Majuro now registered USNM 371631. The young of the species mimic dark damselfishes, thereby getting closer to their prey (Snyder et al., 2001).

Aulacocephalus temminckii Sleeker, 1854, Shallow water records: Japan (type locality), Korea, and Tai¬wan in the north, New Zealand, Kermadec Islands, and Rapa in the south, hence antitropical (Indian Ocean records also subtropical). A Marshall Islands record would seem an exception, but the specimen was handiined in cool deep water at Aur Atoll (90 km

north of Majuro) by Hiroyuki Yoshida. Observed from a submersible in Palau by Patrick L. Colin at depths of 114-143 rn. Fig. 11.

Cephalopholis aurantia (Valenciennes, 1828). Wide ranging in the Indo-Pacific from the east coast of Africa to Tahiti (type locality, Seychelles). Few records are reported due to small size (largest, 226 mm SL) and deep reef habitat (generally 100-250 m). Market spec¬imen from Majuro is deposited at the National Museum of Natural History (USNM 364618).

Cephalopholis igarashiensis Katayama, 1957. Also a deep reef species with few reported records: Japan (type locality, Izu Islands), Taiwan, Guam, Philippines, Fiji, American Samoa, and Tahiti (from 250 m). Our Majuro specimen, USNM 364622. Named for Mr. Igarashi, so the suffix ens/s was not appropriate (but cannot be changed). Fig. 12.

Cephalopholis polleni (Bleeker, 1868). Known from islands of the western Indian Ocean (type locality, Reunion) to the Tuamotu Archipelago, but from few records. Usually seen in more than 30 m; occurs to at least 70 m. A coral reef species often found on steep drop-offs, especially near caves, Unmistakably coloured yellow with bright blue stripes. Photograph taken in 60 m at Kwajalein by BOG, on file at Bishop Musem, Honolulu.

Epinephelus chlorostigma (Valenciennes, 1828). Reported from the Red Sea and east coast of Africa to the Samoa Islands, type locality, Seychelles (where this species comprises nearly half the grouper landings). Known from depths as shallow as 4 m in the Red Sea to 150-280 m in New Caledonia, an unusu¬ally broad range in depth. Our market specimen from Majuro is USNM 364623. Not seen by the authors while diving,

Epinephelus miliaris (Valenciennes, 1830). A relatively rare species reported from the east coast of Africa to the Caroline and Samoa Islands, Also with a surpris¬ingly broad range of depth, from 1-2 rn at Aldabra and Palau to about 200 m in the Maldives. Distinctively colored with large close-set black spots in the soft portion of its fins. Majuro specimen, USNM 371629. Fig. 13.
