Two from Necker Island, in July, about 53 mm. long.
Aulostomidae
Aulostomus chinensis (Linne).
Two from French Frigate Shoals, one from Lisiansky shore-reef in May, and one from Wake Island. Length 487 to 720 mm. Several seen at Laysan in five fathom pools near outer edge of reef. Although not easily frightened, refused all bait.

Fishes of Hawaii, Johnston Island, and Wake Island 11
French Frigate Shoals in June. Few seen at Laysan but abundant at Lisiansky. Many were over 600 mm. long.
Neomyxus chaptalii (Eydoux and Souleyet).
One from French Frigate Shoals, one from Laysan and five from Johnston Island, 53 to 337 mm. Few at Laysan Island, abundant at Lisiansky, whence one 245 mm. was taken.
Sphyraenidae
Sphyraena japonica Valenciennes.
Three from Johnston Island 448 to 55o mm. Scales 122 in lateral line to caudal base. Two gilt longitudinal lines on sides, very characteristic of the species.
In his account of Sphyraena japonica Schlegel does not mention gilt longitudinal lines, though the spinous dorsal is said to be well behind the pectoral tip. Weber says "origin of first dorsal behind tip of pectorals and before origin of ventrals," though our specimen has ventral origin before spinous-dorsal origin.
Polynemidae
Polydactylus sexfilis (Valenciennes).
Fifteen from Laysan April 20, 155 to 225 mm., where common. One from Lisiansky where abundant. Many 375 mm. long were taken. One from French Frigate Shoals in June.
Scombridae
Euthynnus alletteratus (Rafinesque).
One caught by a sailor one mile off Laysan, cut up for bait. A portion preserved.
Centrolophidae
Psenes arafurensis Gunther.
One in very poor condition, found partly dried beside a nest of Anous stolidus on Gardner Island, May 22. Length 68 mm. It appears to be the incompletely described Psenes arafurensis, based on an example but 38 mm. long. Gunther describes the color as "silvery, with some obscure crossbands, which extend over and are more distinct on the anal fin. Ventrals black in basal and terminal two-thirds." The obscure cross-bands are not present in our specimen. The species is of interest as an addition to the fauna of Oceania.
